Burnt Mill are a new brewery for us – and indeed, a new brewery in general, set up in the last year producing fresh, unfiltered beers from their Suffolk farm. Dank Mode caught our eye as it’s a collaboration with Fieldwork and a tribute to mid-nineties video games.
It’s a DIPA brewed with Mosaic and Enigma hops, a blend of Maris Otter, pale malt, oats and Caramalt to create a flavour profile which is dank, dank, dank.
First impressions on pouring? Not super murky but clearly unfiltered with a hazy, amber hue. The taste is full on resin, pine, and grassy hops with tropical notes. There’s a sweet, caramel malt backbone but the overall aroma and flavour is unrelenting pungent, dank, hemp.
Dank Mode could be a marmite beer but we love it – without hesitation, our beer of the year so far.
Burnt Mill are surely ones to watch in 2018; already collaborating with the likes of Fieldwork and producing beers like this. If this beer was a mid-nineties video game, it’d be Super Mario Bros – and Burnt Mill have just used a cheat code to skip straight to the last level.
