If you’re unfamiliar with Toast (the brewers, not your breakfast), they’ve been brewing beers using leftover bread since 2015. Inspired by the Brussels Beer Project’s Babylone (a bread-based beer), founder Tristram Stuart, wanted to tackle bread waste at an industrial level while also raising awareness for food waste globally.
Since their inception, Toast have won multiple awards and with forecasts predicting profitability by 2019, they’ve pledged those profits to be given to the charity, Feedback.
While they’re working on tackling food waste on a massive scale, you can do your bit by starting at home. If you’re a homebrewer (or you fancy giving it a go), Toast have made their Homebrew Recipe available online.
We all end up with leftover bread; whether it’s the ends that nobody likes or you live on your own and never finish a loaf, we can’t think of anything better than turning those leftovers into beer… In fact, we’ll raise a toast to that!
