We’re reviewing the entire Northern Powerhouse Brew Series – this is beer six, after 008, 006, 007, 001 and 002.
I was glad to see a saison come out of the fridge next and this delivered exactly what I wanted with traditional aromas of earthiness, bananas, cloves and a rich savoury note. The flavour backs this up – there’s that trademark ‘Belgian’ flavour supplied by the choice of yeast that gives this beer a beautiful funk with plenty of banana and bubble-gum in the mix.

I had very high expectations, and that’s a sign of how much I love Cloudwater and Wylam but this was my first slight disappointment of the series. From the can, it poured a viscous brown and there was an instant hit of big sweet smells spilling out of the glass. READ MORE

I’m glad this didn’t appear right at the end of the night. Too many people consign their impy stouts to that stage of an evening, but I want to experience this style in the middle of some paler beers. The contrast enhances the experience! READ MORE
We’re reviewing the entire Northern Powerhouse Brew Series – this is the third beer we tried, after 008 and 006. An interesting beer, it seems to lie right in the middle of the previous two in terms of flavour, if not ABV.
The pour is positively luminous, pouring a thick and juicy, off-yellow (if that’s not a colour, it is now). The aroma is that big old, citra hop cutting through predominantly, but I also get a slight grassy hit from it, which isn’t unusual for me and this particular hop.

Another beautifully opaque beer, more vibrant in colour; a bright orange juice appearance and slightly less carbonation. The aroma is delightful – it’s got a wonderfully creamy, vanilla scent that rounds off the citrus fruit. This really drew me in.
